How we do it boggles the mind. It may be impossible to describe how to educate, but it might be possible to practice some specific techniques-like other techniques I have learned and posted elsewhere on this web site-little self-organizing tricks for adjusting our habits. We do best when we tune into experience, right now, as it happens, delaying our preconceptions and reflex habits to act with precision. We don’t really teach anything. Instead, our calling is to practice the enrichment of opportunity and refine our sophistication of stewardship. We change so they live in their own ways, survive inevitable risk and mistakes, and, because they are treated well, soon flow with in their natural kindness and wisdom in community with others. Gradually we begin to discover the children are just fine the way they are. It takes more than having the right attitude or an academic degree: it takes diligence, hopefully at every moment, to have our actions match our aspirations. It is something we practice, get better at gradually, and keep working on all our lives. Gradually the watching becomes an experiencing process, an evolved attentiveness. We can only watch ourselves to discover ourselves.

We have no way to understand how this happens. It is challenging to create opportunities for children where they get be, act, and experience life fully to become themselves, care for others, and contribute to a community, each one in their own way. At the beginning, we have to develop a very sharp, precise mind to see what we are, to learn how to relax and wait, to allow what takes place, and to devote ourselves to adjusting what we do.
